Protest over book store closure

The Borders store in Swindon is to close on 9 August

Readers are being urged to take their favourite work of literature along to a protest over a planned book shop closure in Swindon.

The Save Swindon Borders campaign was organised by Peter Dilly, a former worker at the Thamesdown Drive store, which is due to close on 9 August.

"The campaign has gathered over 1,900 petition signatures and the Facebook group has over 200 members," he said.

Mr Dilly said Sunday's event would be a "silent protest".

He added: "The strength of public feeling has been outstanding. Members of the Swindon community are outraged by the planned closure and have emphasised with passion the importance that Borders has in our town."

Lib Dem councillor Dave Wood said: "We are planning a peaceful, non-political expression of our commitment to this cause.

"We need people to come and bring their favourite book, take a seat on the steps by the library and show their loyalty for Swindon Borders."

The high street bookseller confirmed it planned to close its Swindon store last month.

Around 19 staff are listed on the company's website as being employed at the shop.

The silent protest is due to take place at 1400 BST on Sunday.
